FAQs about the mentoring process
Can I use my ReciproCoach mentoring hours towards ICF certification?
Yes, as long as the mentor you are matched with fulfils the criteria set down by the ICF for the particular level of certification you are applying for.
How do I know what kind of mentor I'll get?
When you register for a ReciproCoach round, you fill in a form that asks you questions about what kind of mentor you'd prefer to be matched with. This includes information like experience, training, expertise, gender, religion, location etc. Although we can't guarantee you'll get a mentor that matches all your criteria, usually you'll get a mentor who fulfils some of your needs and most coaches find they get just the right coach at the just the right time.
Can I choose my own mentor?
You can make requests for mentors before a round closes. While requests are not guaranteed, in most cases if you submit multiple requests, you'll usually get one of the mentors you prefer. Also, if you and a coach arrange to join a round together, specifically so that you can be matched together, you may stipulate this during registration as a "Special Request" in which case you'll definitely be matched with that mentor.
Do I mentor and get mentored by the same person?
No. ReciproCoach rounds are set up so that you get matched with a mentor AND a mentee. Your role as a mentor is completely separate from your role as a mentee.
What if I know I don't want to be coached by a certain kind of mentor?
If you don't want to be coached by a certain kind of mentor, or for that matter, a particular mentor, you can say so as a "special request" when you register.
Can I have a mentor with more experience than me?
Yes. Although our mentor rounds are separated into experience brackets, within your bracket, your mentor may have up to several hundred more hours experience than you.
I would love to have an international mentor but am concerned about the cost of phonecalls.
If you have broadband/adsl then you can download skype and speak to your mentor/mentee for free, if they also have skype. If they don't have skype, you can also make a call to their phone via skype, which costs about $2/hour for counties. In many cases, a one hour call to a first world country will cost less than the cost of a cup of coffee. If you can't get skype, you can buy a phone card from your local 7/11 and it costs about the same.
